: To Stretch Or Not To Stretch

To Stretch Or Not To Stretch

12 Apr

To stretch, or not to stretch, that is often the question. Some swim coaches believe in having their swimmers stretch before, during, or after practice; while others feel that stretching is a waste of time and effort. Whatever your coach’s view, these facts are irrefutable:

  • Stretching increases the length of muscle fibers and longer muscle fibers create more force when contracted.
  • Stretching assists in correct posture by lengthening tight muscles that pull areas of the body away from their intended positions.
  • Stretching improves range of motion and muscle coordination.
  • Stretching enhances blood flow and nutrient supply.
  • Stretching can prevent injury.
